We’re already three weeks into the new year, but 2024 is just starting for most art galleries in NYC. There have been over 150+ openings in January so far, from mega-galleries like Pace opening four new shows in one night to smaller LES galleries like Miguel Abreu’s new exhibition with Liz Deschenes. There are so many excellent shows to choose from, but we narrowed down our list to five must-see picks.

Guidi’s "Rituals" takes you on a visual adventure through imagined landscapes. The artist uses a detailed technique, mixing sand, acrylic, oil, and rocks to create impressive work, letting you explore the artist's inner world.

Walking through Guzmán’s new show “The Man Who Should Be Dead” at Kurimanzutto is like exploring a life-size dystopian storybook. Throughout each chapter, the show unfolds a narrative universe filled with places, gods, characters, references, and inspirations.

A group show from “Nota Bene” podcasters Nate Freeman and Benjamin Godsill felt inevitable, and now it’s here at Broadway gallery, living up to our high expectations. They brought together friends like Al Freeman, Matt Johnson, Andrew Kuo, Hilary Pecis, Jonas Wood and more for an incredible group show of contemporary artists you’ll want to see before it closes at the end of the month.

Nadin’s “The Invisible World” is a loose continuation to his last show “The Distance from a Lemon to Murder” from 2020. Nadin works out of Old Field Farm, an isolated part of the Catskills. The farm’s labor, activities and output - as well as the surrounding landscapes and communities - have increasingly informed his practice, which you can see in this new show as he returns to human narratives. His colorful, dreamlike paintings draw you into each story.

January 13 - February 10, 2024
"Find and Keep” puts Janine Iversen and Peter Shear’s work in conversation as they express their own ideas of abstract painting and what it can achieve. Iversen’s big optical situations paired with Shear’s smaller odes to painting’s infinite expressions, together celebrate the endless possibilities of painting.
